California Department of Justice, OpenJustice, Crimes and Clearances file (1985-2025). Counts of offenses reported to Chico Police Department. Violent total is homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property total is burglary, motor vehicle theft and larceny-theft.
Year Violent Total Homicide Rape Robbery Aggravated Assault Property Total Burglary Motor Vehicle Theft Larceny-Theft
2021 534 3 76 61 394 2,418 277 456 1,685

2024 699 2 133 83 481 1,914 210 205 1,499
2025 675 2 116 71 486 1,861 166 179 1,516

Each year is a separate count. A change from one year to the next can come from more crime, more reporting, a change in how an agency counts, or a late correction, and the state file does not say which.

Agencies Around Chico, 2025

The table is in alphabetical order. It is not a ranking, and the agencies are not the same size. A city police department reports for its city. A sheriff’s office reports for the areas it covers, which is not the same as a town boundary. California State University, Chico has its own police department, and its counts are separate from Chico Police Department’s.

How to Read These Numbers

  • Counts, not rates. The state file has no population column, so we did not work out rates per person. A count from a city of 100,000 people and a count from a town of 10,000 are not comparable as printed.
  • Serious offenses only. The file covers the offenses the FBI and the state call “Part I” crimes. It leaves out most of what police respond to, including lower-level offenses and calls for service.
  • Reported crime.Offenses nobody reported to police are not in it.
  • Town populations change.Paradise’s population has changed a great deal since 2018, so its counts are not comparable year to year without population figures. Current population estimates are on Rent and Home Values by Town.
  • This page does not say where to live.It reports what the agencies filed. It does not call any place safe or unsafe.

Not Confirmed

  • The FBI’s Crime Data Explorer figures are not confirmed, so no FBI figures are printed; check the FBI Crime Data Explorer. Link only: FBI Crime Data Explorer.
  • Chico Police Department’s 2025 Annual Report is published as a design-site document, so none of its figures are printed. Open it from the department’s Annual Report page.
  • Clearance (solved-case) counts are in the state file but are not printed here.
  • Whether the 2025 rows will be revised later is not stated in the file.
