Lake Oroville Boating and Fishing Guide

Lake Oroville, behind Oroville Dam, has about 15,500 surface acres and 167 miles of shoreline at full pool, per California State Parks. Day use is $8 a car and $5 to launch a boat, and fishing is open all year with a California license. Ramps open or close as the water rises and falls, so check the ramp page first.

Launch Ramps and Lake Level

State Parks runs the ramps in stages tied to lake elevation, with 900 feet as a full lake. On the day we checked, Bidwell Canyon, Spillway and Loafer Point were open at Stage 2 and Lime Saddle was open; Enterprise, Dark Canyon, Nelson Bar, Stringtown and Vinton Gulch were closed. That changes with the water, so use the State Parks launch ramp page or call the Northern Buttes District Office at (530) 538-2200.

For today’s lake level, the state’s CDEC data service reports Oroville Dam as station ORO; the reservoir page shows elevation, storage and percent of capacity. CDEC lists capacity as 3,424,753 acre-feet.

Mussel inspections: the State Parks ramp page says the Department of Water Resources ended its inspection program on April 29, 2026, that seal checks are no longer required, and that launching is open 24 hours a day. An older posted order on the park page still describes the blue seal rule and 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. ramp hours. We follow the newer ramp page and flag the difference below.

Marinas

Marina What it offers (its own site) Hours and phone
Lime Saddle Marina Houseboat rentals (56 to 70 feet), ski and patio boats, fuel dock, store, floating, boat-in and group camping 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; (530) 877-2883
Bidwell Canyon Marina Ski, pontoon, kayak and paddleboard rentals, slips, fuel dock Office Mon to Fri 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; store daily 8 to 4:30; (530) 589-9175

State Parks lists both marinas as run by Oroville Lake Marina, LLC. Houseboats rent from Lime Saddle.

Fishing

State Parks names largemouth and smallmouth bass, Chinook salmon, catfish, Mackinaw, sturgeon, brown trout and white crappie, and asks anglers to check the black bass slot limits. Licenses are sold at wildlife.ca.gov/Licensing, through sales agents, or at (800) 565-1458. River rules are in the CDFW freshwater regulations booklet.

Below the dam, the North Thermalito Forebay is for sailboats, canoes and other boats without motors. It has a 200-yard sandy beach, an accessible fishing pier and frequent trout plants. The South Forebay is for power boats and fishing.

Floating Camps and Campgrounds

The park has boat-in and floating campsites as well as drive-in, group and equestrian camping, booked through ReserveCalifornia. Floating campsites check in at the Loafer Creek kiosk, (530) 538-2217. Where they sit depends on the lake level, and pets are not allowed on them. On land, dogs are allowed in parking lots, on paved roads and in campgrounds, but not on trails or in day-use areas.

The Dam and The Fish Hatchery

The Department of Water Resources finished Oroville Dam in 1967 after five years of work, State Parks says; it stands 770 feet above the Feather River streambed. The Lake Oroville Visitor Center at 917 Kelly Ridge Road has a 47-foot viewing tower with telescopes looking over the lake and the dam; phone (530) 538-2219.

The CDFW Feather River Fish Hatchery at 5 Table Mountain Boulevard raises Chinook salmon and steelhead and is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Underwater windows show fish from about mid-September through June. Salmon spawning can be watched Monday to Friday from mid-September to mid-November, and steelhead spawning from mid-December to mid-February. The Oroville Salmon Festival is held on the fourth Saturday of September.

By boat at full pool, you can get within a quarter mile of 640-foot Feather Falls, State Parks notes. For a two-day plan, see A Lake Oroville Weekend.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Ramp hours and mussel rules: the newer State Parks ramp page (24 hours, no seal check since April 29, 2026) and the older posted order on the park page (blue seal, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.) disagree. Check the ramp page before you tow. Not confirmed
  • Bidwell Canyon Marina’s site gives 1968 for the dam and “over 3.5 million” acre-feet; State Parks gives 1967 and CDEC 3,424,753 acre-feet. We use the agency figures.
  • Peak and holiday day-use rates are not published. Not confirmed
  • We could not open the Department of Water Resources Oroville page (blocked), so no DWR page is cited.
