Chico History in Five Eras

Before 1848. The Mechoopda village stood on Little Butte Creek south of today’s downtown. In 1845 the Mexican government granted Rancho Arroyo Chico, which John Bidwell bought in 1849 (see the dates).

1848 to 1867. Gold on the Feather River paid for Bidwell’s rancho. He laid out Chico in 1860. In Oroville a Chinese community built a temple, and in the hills Dogtown gave up a 54-pound nugget.

1868 to 1918. John and Annie Bidwell married in 1868 and moved into the new mansion. The Normal School opened on his orchard in 1889, and Annie gave Bidwell Park in 1905.

1919 to 1971. The college grew and bought the mansion, Hollywood filmed Robin Hood in the park in 1937, State Parks took over the mansion in 1964 and Oroville Dam was finished in 1967.

1972 to today. Chico State became a university, Paradise became a town, the Mechoopda regained federal recognition in 1992, and the region is rebuilding after the 2018 Camp Fire and the 2024 mansion fire.
