Honey Run Covered Bridge

The Honey Run Covered Bridge crosses Butte Creek in Butte Creek Canyon. The original 1887 bridge was destroyed in the November 2018 Camp Fire. Supporters rebuilt it with private donations, and the association says the bridge and its park reopened in 2025. In August 2026 the association asked for a long-term steward for the bridge and park. Checked October 29, 2026 on the operator’s own pages.

Key Facts

  • The bridge opened to the public on January 3, 1887 and was covered in 1901.[1]
  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.[1]
  • The original bridge was 238 feet long, with three unequal spans of 30, 128 and 80 feet, and the association calls it the only three-span truss bridge of its kind in the United States.[2]
  • The nonprofit Honey Run Covered Bridge Association formed in 1965 and bought the land for the adjacent bridge park in 1972.[1]
  • The bridge was destroyed in the November 2018 Camp Fire.[3]
  • In January 2019 supporters decided to rebuild it with its original design and appearance plus necessary safety upgrades.[3]
  • In April 2019 the association learned FEMA would only reimburse reconstruction costs and the County had no funds, so the rebuild was funded by private donations.[3]
  • In October 2020 Butte County transferred ownership of the bridge and right-of-way to the association.[2]
  • Foundations and abutments were finished in November 2020; the association lists 2025 as the year the bridge structure was complete and the bridge and park opened to the public.[3]
  • On August 25, 2026 the association issued a Request for Information seeking a public agency or nonprofit to take ownership of the bridge and parcel and keep it open to the public; responses were due September 25, 2026.[2]
  • The Paradise Recreation & Park District is separately planning a future park on land it bought in Butte Creek Canyon, which it describes as a private residence for now.[4]
