What The Weekend Holds
The Round-Up’s own menu lists a Friday night performance, a Saturday afternoon performance, a Sunday afternoon performance, a Saturday night concert, the Wild Ride, track events and Mutton Bustin’. Only the Friday start time is printed so far. The organizer calls it a major PRCA spring rodeo, and the largest three-day rodeo in the country.
A Short History
The Round-Up’s history page traces rodeo in Tehama County to 1918, at the A.H. Clough Ranch in Los Molinos, after the spring round-up of the herds. Ranchers and businessmen from Red Bluff and Chico then formed the Northern California Round-Up Association, and the Red Bluff Round-Up Association followed. The rodeo was cancelled in 1923, and again the next year when hoof-and-mouth disease hit the herds. It held its 100th anniversary in 2021. The association says more than $350,000 goes back to local organizations after each rodeo.
Know Before You Go
The Round-Up has a clear bag policy, and all bags, jackets and blankets are searched. Its list of items not allowed on the grounds includes:
- Outside food and drinks, cans, glass bottles and personal coolers
- Umbrellas, banners and signs, laser pointers and noisemakers
- Professional cameras with detachable lenses, and video cameras including GoPro-type cameras
- Knives with blades longer than 3 inches, and other weapons
- Pets: only service animals are allowed
The PRCA rules also bar recording or streaming the performances without permission.
